How Travel Inspires Fashion

Have you ever traveled somewhere new and started to notice things you never paid attention to before? For me, traveling changes that way I look at the world and the way I see fashion. When I travel, I notice colors, textures, architecture, foods, languages, and individual styles. Even after returning home, I find myself paying more attention to details in my everyday surroundings that I overlooked before. My experiences traveling have taught me that inspiration can come from anywhere.
Travel Influences How I See Fashion
Travel exposes me to different cultures, styles, and ways of creating and wearing clothing. A new environment can introduce colors, patterns, textures, and shapes that I may not normally see in my everyday life. The details may seem small, but they can become sources of inspiration for a project that is bigger. Travel has taught me to slow down and appreciate the small details instead of letting them pass by. It makes me realize, inspiration is not necessarily limited to fashion designers or fashion shows, it is all around.

Designers Find Inspiration Through Travel Too
Professional fashion designers share my experience of finding inspiration through travel. According to Bossi (2023), designer LaQuan Smith was inspired during a trip to Morocco by the country's colors, textures, and atmosphere, including the spice market. These experiences influenced the color palette and silhouettes of his Spring 2023 collection. Travel allows designers to experience outside of their normal surroundings, which can lead to new creative ideas. Fashion does not always have to come from clothing, it can come from a place, meal, building, landscape, or even a feeling created by being somewhere new.

Finding Inspiration Everywhere
I used to view inspiration as something that has to be intentional and searched for, but now I see that it can happen naturally when just slowing down to pay attention to the world that surrounds us. To me. Fashion is not about following trends, it is about observing the world and turning those experiences into something creative. Travel can spark creativity, and creativity can create connections. The places we visit, the cultures we experience, and the details we notice can inspire us to create something that we can then share with others.
